Principal Engineering Manager

Engineering leader with 20+ years’ experience building content platforms, editorial systems and large-scale digital infrastructure across media, sport and enterprise.

Hi, I'm Ash! 👋 I’ve spent over two decades working on web platforms, content systems, and digital publishing tools — building and refining the plumbing behind editorial workflows, global publishing, and large-scale digital content delivery.

Today I work at the Financial Times, leading multiple teams of 30+ engineers and engineering managers, shaping architecture, delivery pipelines, developer experience and tooling for editorial technology.

In the past, I’ve worked with organisations and brands like World Athletics, Volkswagen Group and Getty Images — helping deliver content platforms, intranet products, apps, and infrastructure for high-traffic, mission-critical systems.

I believe in simple, robust engineering: clean architecture, maintainable code, scalable systems, and thoughtful collaboration. I mentor engineers at multiple levels, help build teams that can handle complexity gracefully, and enjoy translating ambitious product ideas into practical, reliable solutions.

Lately I’ve also been exploring how AI can support engineering workflows — building guardrails, enabling teams with smarter tools, and experimenting with automation where it makes sense (without sacrificing quality or control).

If you’re interested in content systems, platform engineering, editorial tech, or just want to talk about solving difficult problems with clear thinking — welcome. Feel free to take a look around, and reach out if something resonates.
